Breckland's Food Waste Collection Service
The inclusion of a food waste to your waste collection service will be introduced through new legislation from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). Known as 'Simpler Recycling' it has been brought in to help make bin day easier and aims the confusion of what can and can't be recycled.
Who is affected by this?
Everyone in England will be affected by Simpler Recycling but the timeline for businesses and households are different so please read on to find the dates you will need to be ready by.
By 31 March 2025:
All businesses and other non-household premises (with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees) must implement recycling practices for all recyclable waste streams.
What does this mean for your business?
Simpler Recycling is a new regulation, applicable to any business that has 10 or more full-time equivalent employees (10FTE). It means that by 31 March 2025 you will need to separate dry recycling and food waste from your general waste and into different bins. If a business chooses to ignore this requirement they are not complying with regulations and could be subject to further action by the Environment Agency.
There is no minimum volume of waste for collections and all premises producing food waste (including tea bags etc.) as well as recycling will need to arrange separate collections in accordance with the new requirements.
We can help you conduct a waste audit to better understand how to improve your recycling rates whilst reducing your waste management costs. These will be tailored to you ensuring effective and compliant waste management solutions that best suit your business and the waste you produce.
By 31 March 2026:
A new weekly food waste collection service will be introduced to all residents. More information will be provided nearer the time.
All other waste services will remain the same with the black bin for all dry recycling, the green bin for any general waste and the subscription brown bin for garden waste.
By 31 March 2027:
Micro-firms (with under 10 full-time equivalent employees) must comply with the new recycling requirements.
