Youth Homelessness

As parents have parental responsibility until their child is 18, they will always be contacted by the Council for clarification of circumstances.

If you are experiencing Troubles at Home please look at ourTroubles at home page for helpful information

If a young person presents as homeless we will offer to refer people with relationship problems to mediation this may also include a referral to Children Services Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH), to try to solve their problems. We prioritise preventing homelessness and would seek to work with a young person and their family to keep them within their family home if it is safe to do so.

The options for a 16-17 year old are very limited as they cannot legally hold a tenancy until they are 18 years old so options would be supported accommodation. The Housing Team may assist you in finding supported accommodation if this best suits your needs, this could be staying with a family under YMCA Services.

We will assist with:

  • An assessment of your situation and draw up a personal housing plan.
  • General housing advice and signposting around issues like benefits and managing a tenancy.
  • Support and help to stay in your own home where it is safe and appropriate to do so.
  • If you have a Care Leaver status then you will meet the priority need test. The Council would need to work with yourself and Children Services to complete a Housing Assessment and to draw up a Personal Housing Plan. You would need to contact your Leaving Care Social Worker for them arrange an appointment with the Council.
