03/06/19: £10,000 lottery grant available for local groups
To celebrate Volunteers Week (1-7 June), community groups and good causes across Breckland are being offered the chance to access grants from a special £10,000 pot, courtesy of Breckland Council's Our Breckland Lottery Community Fund.
Local good causes which are signed up to the community lottery, organised by the district council, will be eligible to access grants of £250, £500 or £1,000, depending on the number of new Our Breckland Lottery supporters they can recruit over the next few months.
Since its launch in March 2018, the Our Breckland Lottery has raised just under £40,000 for local charities and community groups, thanks to tickets purchased by the community. Half of every £1 ticket goes directly to the player's nominated good cause, 20p goes to the lottery prize fund, and 20p goes towards running costs. The remaining 10p is put into a general grants fund, which Breckland Council is now redistributing to good causes through this £10k grant initiative.
There are currently 67 community groups, sports clubs, and charities signed up to the lottery, meaning they can be selected by players as beneficiaries of their ticket sales. There is no cost to good causes to take part in the lottery and the weekly jackpot for players is £25,000!
PACT animal Sanctuary, based in Woodrising, were one of the first organisations to sign up and thanks to their regular lottery supporters, have to date received over £3,700. Lottery funding is vital for charities like PACT, who rescue and look after domestic animals and wildlife, operating all year round thanks to a small staff and team of over 100 dedicated volunteers. Our Breckland lottery tickets have helped fund the PACT animal ambulance and cover veterinary care costs for injured or abandoned animals.
Cllr Mark Robinson, Executive Member for Community, Leisure and Culture at Breckland Council, commented: "The Our Breckland Lottery is a fantastic way for people to support a charity or their local sports team while being in with a chance to win up to £25,000. The money raised through the lottery in its inaugural year has already made such a big difference to local groups and we're delighted to offer this extra boost to good causes, who often rely heavily on the support of volunteers."
