09/07/20: Breckland bees are buzzing
Breckland Council is taking steps to create more bee-friendly habitats across the district.
The district council will be leaving some verges and land to grow wild, or operate a 'cut less, cut later' approach, to help bees and other pollinators to thrive.
Figures show that the population of bees and other insects is in decline, so Breckland Council hopes this approach will help boost their numbers and help reverse the decline.
Cllr Ian Sherwood, Executive Member for Customer Engagement and Climate Change, commented: "Allowing verges to grow longer and wildflowers to grow will help pollinators like bees work their magic. We do however need to strike a balance and so will continue to maintain verge cutting where necessary to ensure resident safety prevent drainage damage."
