21/03/2023: Thetford marketplace secures new investment

Thetford's marketplace is set to be transformed thanks to major investment by Breckland Council, in partnership with Thetford Town Council.
The new investment from Breckland Council's Market Town Initiative programme will see the installation of new festival lighting which will go around the marketplace, with additional lampposts added to improve lighting for events and markets. The historic site will also see power supplies to the site upgraded, allowing stall holders and event providers to link up to the power network more easily, rather than running cables from local public buildings. Finally, the marketplace will see the installation of a new bespoke metal archway gate, which will celebrate the founding of this historic market in since medieval times.
Cllr Paul Claussen, Breckland Council's Executive Member for Executive Member for Economic Development and Growth, commented "I am delighted to see Breckland Council working in partnership with Thetford Town Council to improve the marketplace, making it more attractive for local shoppers, supporting market stall holders keen to trade in that area, and increasing opportunities for public events to be held in this historic area of Thetford."
Cllr Roy Brame and Cllr Jane James, whose Breckland Council Wards include the Market place commented: "This new £20,000 investment will help support public events in the centre of Thetford, and celebrate Thetford and its market, which has an impressive history going back to medieval times."
