11/12/2023: No Excuse for Abuse
Breckland Council Joins National Campaign to Stop Abuse Against Taxi Drivers
Breckland Council has announced its active participation in a nationwide 'No Excuse for Abuse' campaign, aimed at safeguarding and supporting the local taxi trade. The council stands firm in its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of taxi drivers and taking a strong stand against any form of violence, verbal abuse, racial discrimination, or damage directed towards these essential service providers.
Councillor Helen Crane, Executive Member for Breckland Council, emphasised, "The 'No Excuse for Abuse' campaign is a crucial step in safeguarding our taxi drivers from unwarranted aggression and disrespect. While most passengers are respectful, there exists a very small minority who engage in abusive behaviour, especially whilst under the influence of alcohol. This behaviour is utterly unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
"We firmly believe that taxi drivers deserve to be treated with utmost respect and courtesy at all times," continued Councillor Crane. "Drivers have been strongly encouraged to report any incidents of violence, verbal abuse, racial discrimination, or vehicle damage to the police. It is the fundamental right of every individual to feel secure in their workplace, and our drivers deserve nothing less."
As part of the awareness campaign local taxi drivers will be provided with car stickers reminding passengers that abuse will not be tolerated.
