11/01/24: Breckland Council paves the way for increased penalties in Norfolk

Breckland Council has announced that it will be increasing the maximum penalties for fly-tipping, littering and personal responsibility violations in line with recent Government legislation. It will be the first council in Norfolk to impose these new measures.

The increase will ensure that offenders are held accountable for their actions, and that the penalties for these offences are reflective of the harm they cause to our environment and our quality of life. The maximum penalty for fly-tipping has been raised from £400 to £1000, while littering will now carry a maximum penalty of £500, up from £150. Additionally, personal responsibility violations will now have a maximum penalty of £600, up from £400.

This decision was made as a result of the Council's commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for its residents. The increased penalties will not only act as a deterrent for potential offenders but will also help fund public awareness activity and further investigations.

Cllr Helen Crane, Executive Member for Waste, Environmental Health, Licensing and Sustainability said "The increase to our maximum penalties is an important step in combatting the growing issue of waste-related offences in our communities. It is also another step forward in our commitment to protect the environment. With these new measures in place, we can work towards a cleaner, greener future for all. Additionally, the increase in personal responsibility violations will act as invaluable deterrent across different areas of the council, including private housing."
