08/10/2024: Breckland Council issues fines totalling £800 in anti-litter crackdown

Breckland Council's Environmental Enforcement Team has been working closely with local communities to tackle littering across the district, leading to several successful investigations and fines totalling £800. 

As well as taking action against fly-tips, the council is also cracking down on littering in the district. In recent weeks, four separate fines have been issued for littering offences. 

In one case, dash cam footage led to the council issuing a £200 fine to the owner of a vehicle after a passenger was seen throwing litter from a vehicle. This penalty was increased from an original figure due to the vehicle's owner not cooperating in identifying the passenger. 

Another instance in Little Ellingham saw two Attleborough residents fined £300 between them after they discarded boxes from a vehicle, despite being near to the recycling centre. 

Two other investigations, carried out in Dereham and supported by CCTV and local businesses, resulted in further penalties of £150 each. 

To discourage future incidents, the Council has also installed new signage in areas which are thought to be prone to littering, encouraging residents to report offenders. This is part of the council's commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring the district remains a pleasant place for residents and visitors.

By working with the public and local businesses, we are taking a proactive approach to tackle the problem and make a difference in keeping our communities clean."
