07/02/25: Works completed on Cherry Lane Resurfacing Project

Cherry Lane Resurfacing Project

Work has been completed on the Cherry Lane footpath off Norwich Road in Dereham, transforming the worn, muddy surface into a safer, more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists. This scheme has been a joint effort, funded and delivered in partnership by Dereham Town Council and Breckland Council and aims to link Dereham's services, facilities, homes, and employment areas through enhanced walking and cycling infrastructure, aligning with Norfolk County Council's countywide Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).

The last section of the Cherry Lane track has been resurfaced, covering the area from the Norwich Road junction to the point where the path meets the previously completed track near Dereham Windmill. The Cherry Lane cycling and walking project has received £41,000 from the UK Government through the UK Rural Prosperity Fund.

Councillor Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Economy and Growth, said: "The recent resurfacing works have made a huge difference to the condition of the Cherry Lane walkway. These improvements highlight Breckland's partnership working to serve local communities while demonstrating our commitment to sustainability by investing in our cycling and walking routes, making them safer and more usable. We hope this will incentivise more residents to be environmentally conscious and take advantage of the pathway whenever they can."

Linda Monument, Mayor of Dereham, said: "We are delighted to have delivered the Cherry Lane project alongside Breckland Council and through UK Government funding. This much-needed upgrade provides a safer and more accessible route to our residents while improving the overall appearance of the area, which is in line with our goals to encourage healthier, more sustainable travel options in Dereham while strengthening connections within our community."

Linda is also a district council ward member for Dereham Neatherd, alongside Cllr Alison Webb and Cllr William Richmond. Alison Webb and William Richmond added: "As Dereham ward members, we know it is crucial that our town has safe, accessible routes that make everyday journeys easier for our residents. We're pleased to see investment in infrastructure that promotes physical activity and sustainable travel while improving access to properties, schools, and allotments in the area. The Cherry Lane upgrade will benefit everyone who uses it, whether for commuting, exercise or leisure."
