Is it a licensed taxi?
You can check that the vehicle you are using is licensed by looking out for the following:
All Hackney Carriage vehicles:
- Must display a white/black rear Council licence plate and internal front window sticker, as well as a taxi roof light and rear door panel stickers
- Can stand on designated taxi ranks
- Can be hailed on the street, while the roof light is lit
- Can be booked by telephone
- Must have a meter which has a maximum fare set by the Council
- Must display a fare tariff card
- Must be suitably insured for taxi purposes
- Are driven by vetted Council Licensed Drivers who must wear a Council Licence photo badge which is plainly visible
All Private Hire vehicles:
- Must be booked through a licensed operator in advance of any journey
- Must display a yellow/black rear Council private hire licence plate and an internal front window sticker
- Are not subject to fares set by the Council (but you should agree a fare at the time of booking)
- Must be suitably insured for private hire purposes
- Are driven by vetted Council Licensed Drivers who must wear a Council Licence photo badge which is plainly visible
